Darcio Lima: a giant of Surrealism

My aunt, Tânia Teixeira, one of Brazil’s leading paper conservators, introduced me to a remarkable artist, draftsman, and painter. His name is Darcio Lima, and his genius is recognized far beyond Brazil’s borders. His technique goes far beyond the conventional standards of refinement.

Born in the state of Ceará, he moved to Rio de Janeiro at a very young age, but his homeland remained a constant presence throughout his work, expressed through regional scenes featuring jangadas and the beaches of northeastern Brazil. He later immersed himself in a phase dedicated to female nudes. Then came his Surrealist period, which he presented at the L’Atelier Gallery in Rio de Janeiro in 1968.
